Genetics & Evolution

~ Genetics & Evolution ~

Today I will be describing a Siberian Husky. The Husky gets its genetic material from Chukotka sled dogs from Siberia. Huskies reproduce by using sexual reproduction. When sexually reproducing a Husky, the offspring produces genetic variation within the species so they can adapt to new environments, which gives them a survival advantage. The Siberian Husky is naturally purebred unless the owner decides to breed a non purebred Husky.

Over the past 4 weeks we have been learning about Genetics and Evolution. Evolution is a change in an offspring's characteristics over successive generations. These particular characteristics are expressions of genes that are passed from the parent to the offspring during reproduction. Natural selection is the process in which living organisms adapt to an environment and change. This is a key mechanism in evolution. Artificial selection is when humans select for desirable traits in animals. This is the complete opposite of natural selection whereas the species evolve and change gradually without human interference. Artificial selection occurs when humans want to mold organisms to their needs. This process occurs If there is additive genetic variance for the selected trait, it will respond to the selection, that is, the trait will evolve.
